Fat loss is both simple and complex. The complexities come from not understanding what is best for your body – and this is why diet programs often fail. For some people, it’s not just a matter of losing fat, but of gaining muscle mass. It’s in the muscles that calories are “burned,” and without proper percentage of muscle mass you cannot effectively lose body fat. It is for this reason that all of our health enhancement and weight management programs begin with a body composition analysis to assess your body’s fat percentage, water and muscle mass.
Our 22 years experience has lead us to conclude that trying to help a person lose fat that does not feel well will not work! If for example, your joints hurt, you have no energy, you’re depressed and over-eat out of stress, no weight loss program will result in permanent, sustainable fat loss. Exercise, it’s the very best thing on the planet for overfatness. Without exercising, you cannot become healthy, fit and lean. Permanent fat loss is unsustainable without proper exercise. But many overfat people, if they exercise at all, exercise incorrectly. They are not exercising in a way to enhance their metabolism and “calorie burning machinery.” A key component of any successful fat loss program is that of increasing muscle mass – an increased muscle mass and enhanced metabolism is a consequence of proper exercise.
This is why, after considering your physical abilities, health history and body composition results, we spend time recommending a customized exercise program that, if followed, will achieve positive results, positively! Our programs usually require 4 hours of exercise a week. You can do it!
Often, hormone imbalances sabotage a person’s ability to lose fat, keep it off and maintain proper muscle mass. For some people, only when this hormone imbalance is corrected, can they achieve their weight loss goals. There are six hormones that are known to increase metabolism and “burn fat,” and three hormones that contribute to fat gain – through comprehensive diagnostic testing our office is able to identify and correct hormonal imbalances. Once these imbalances are corrected, many people feel and look better and are finally able to lose fat and gain muscle! These same hormones imbalances can and do contribute to unhealthy aging and chronic disease.
For most people struggling to lose fat and keep it off, it’s not necessarily the amount of food, but the type of food that needs to be addressed. Very few of us have become overweight as a consequence of eating too much fruit, vegetables and chicken for example.
Calorie restricting diets often result in muscle mass loss, slowing down of the metabolism and are not sustainable. It is for these reasons that we encourage most of our weight loss clients to adhere to a low glycemic, phytonutrient rich, Mediterranean style of eating. It’s quite simple – the same foods that can make you sick also make you overfat, and these should be avoided. Many of our weight management clients struggle with sugar addiction, and this needs to be addressed – breaking that sugar addiction in the most pain-free way! Our professional nutritionalists who hold Masters of Science degrees in human nutrition, consult one-on-one with clients to develop a program that will last a lifetime, reduce the risk of disease, and result in permanent fat loss.
